The Sauer 38H was a compact semi-automatic pistol produced by J. P. Sauer & Sohn in Suhl, Germany, during the Nazi period. It was designed principally as a service and police handgun and is remembered for its distinctive controls and relatively advanced design.
Its history reflects Germany's rapid rearmament during the 1930s and the demands placed on German arms manufacturers during the Second World War.
1. Development and production, 1938–1945
The Sauer 38H was developed in the late 1930s to compete with compact pistols such as the Walther PP and PPK. Production began around 1938, and the pistol was manufactured through the Second World War, with production ending as Allied forces occupied the factory in 1945. Approximately 250,000–295,000 examples are commonly cited, depending on the source and production estimate.
The manufacturer, J. P. Sauer & Sohn, was based in Suhl, a German town with a long-established firearms industry.
2. Who used the Sauer 38H?
The pistol was used by several German organisations under the Nazi regime, including:
German Army (Heer): issued as a secondary personal weapon to some personnel.
Luftwaffe: German Air Force personnel used the pistol.
German police: an important user group, including police units operating under the Nazi state.
Nazi Party organisations: some pistols were supplied to party officials.
It was a secondary weapon, not the standard pistol of the entire German armed forces. The Luger, P08 and Walther P38 are more closely associated with general German military services.
All deactivated weapons sold by Vigo Militaria and Collectables are deactivated in the United Kingdom and hold London or Birmingham proof marks and come with a certificate stating that the weapon has been deactivated correctly.
