More on the Belgian 1st Independent Brigade Group
The Belgian 1st Independent Brigade Group, also known as the Peron Brigade, was a Belgian military unit during WW2. Formed in the UK in 1941, it was primarily made up of Belgian and Luxembourgish soldiers who had escaped the German invasion in 1940. It landed in Normandy in August 1944, participated in the liberation of Belgium and the Netherlands, and became the basis for the post-war Belgian Army.
Formation and service
Formation: The brigade was formed in the United Kingdom in 1941 from the remnants of the Belgian army that escaped in 1940. It was named after its commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jean-Baptiste Piron.
Early role: The unit was trained in Wales and was initially reserved for the liberation of Belgium and its neighboring countries.
Arrival in Normandy: It landed in Normandy in August 1944 and joined the British 6th Airborne Division.
Liberation of Belgium: It was instrumental in the liberation of Belgium in September 1944, marching through Brussels to jubilant crowds.
Operation Market Garden: The brigade then took part in Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, though it was later withdrawn to be re-equipped and absorb new recruits.
Return to the front: It returned to the fight in April 1945, re-established as a full brigade, and continued to fight in the final battles in the Netherlands.
