Air Vice-Marshal James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson (1915–2001)

Britain's most successful RAF fighter pilot against the Luftwaffe in the Second World War, credited with 38 confirmed aerial victories.

Johnnie Johnson was one of the outstanding Spitfire pilots of the war. He flew operationally over Britain, France and occupied Europe, eventually becoming a senior RAF commander.

Some particularly interesting details:

Early setbacks: He initially struggled to get into the RAF because of an old rugby injury to his collarbone.

Douglas Bader: He served in Bader's famous Tangmere Wing, learning from one of the RAF's most celebrated fighter leaders.

His own aircraft: His best-known Spitfire was Mk IX EN398, carrying the code JE-J.

D-Day: On 6 June 1944, he led 144 Canadian Wing on four missions over the Normandy beaches.

Remarkable survival: He flew hundreds of combat sorties without ever being shot down.
